Western Australia Wine Regions

The Great Southern Region - Denmark

Somerset Hill Winery - Denmark

Wth a land size of a third of Australia, the west is our largest State, with the wine growing regions mostly in the south western area along the coast for 100 kilometers and pushing into the southeast. Denmark is located on the southern coast and is therefore largely a maritime climate. Rainfall is good and consistent and relative humidity is lowered by the sea breezes from the Great Southern ocean. Grapes are therefore allowed to mature slowly and naturally during the ripening season with abundant sunshine and the harvest kept cool by the coastal winds. The area is typically Australian 'bush' and scenic - huge granite outcrops side by side with ancient Australian hardwood trees. The soil type is typically sandy loams over granite. It’s best known for it’s cool climate Pinot Noir and Semillon wines.

Spectacularly beautiful, this area is quickly building a reputation for a range of wines of outstanding quality. It wasn’t too long ago that the Margaret River was a classic surfer and tourist mecca with it’s location alongside the river and the Indian Ocean. It was first planted with vines in the1960’s by enterprising locals who recognized the climate and soils were similar to Bordeaux in France. Because of this, the Margaret River region has attracted some of the country’s most innovative winemakers. The cool maritime breezes provide a pleasantly warm climate and good rainfalls for the region. Each year the winemakers of this region good naturedly battle with other Australian areas for the title of the best Shiraz. But the climate also produces terrific Aussie Sauvignon Blanc and Sem Sauv Blanc wines,
